MENTAL SKILLS
TRAINING (13+)
Mental Skills | Purpose | Programs & Fees | FAQ
Our MENTAL SKILLS TRAINING for athletes aged 13+ complements our physical (performance) training. While often overlooked, mental skills are essential for maximizing performance and supporting long-term physical and mental well-being.
Athletes work with coach Doug using a triathlon-specific mental skills manual, with sessions adapted to their personal context. Developing mental toughness and resilience is a critical component of a holistic training program.
What are mental skills?
In this context, mental skills refer to cognitive, affective, and motivational tools that we can develop and use to reshape challenging situations or enhance our strengths,
helping us to reach our potential.
The field of sports psychology provides theories and strategies that we can use as mental tools to work through complex scenarios we encounter in our pursuit of athletic success.
This program will cover the following mental tools
1
Goal Setting
2
Imagery
3
Self-Talk
4
Attention
5
Attribution Theory
6
Competition Planning
Just like we practice different physical skills, we believe that it is essential
to develop our mental skills if we hope to reach our peak.
Who is the mental skills program for?
ALL athletes benefit from developing their mental strength,
not only those experiencing problems.
Mental skills training is not a magic pill that immediately fixes everything, but when practiced systematically and consistently, it can enhance performance for most athletes.
Our program can be adapted for athletes 13 and up.
How will this program help me increase my performance?
Confidence. Consistency. Commitment. Motivation. Enjoyment. Reduced Anxiety.
The different modules of this program equip athletes to approach race day and hard workouts with greater confidence and less anxiety by building a strong foundation of mental skills. Furthermore, these mental skills can increase their motivation, their enjoyment of the support, and support their consistent adherence to physical training -
a key performance indicator of successful athletes.
What does this program consist of and how much does it cost?
We offer two mental skills programs, each consisting of multiple 30-minute sessions.
1
Aluminum Plan
8 sessions
$200
2
Carbon Plan
12 sessions
$295
Both programs use a triathlon-specific manual to cover the same core topics.
The difference lies in the depth of coverage and the level of support provided.
The shorter Aluminum program requires more independent work, while the more comprehensive Carbon program allows additional time for questions, reflection, problem-solving, and habit development.
Aluminum Plan
Carbon Plan

After completing either program, athletes may schedule optional 20min follow-up sessions ($25) to review progress, evaluate strategies, and address current challenges.
Club members receive a 5% discount for the
Aluminum Plan, the Carbon Plan and optional follow-up sessions.
So is this a one-size-fits-all approach to mental strength?
No. While Doug covers the same core topics with all athletes, the activities and strategies are tailored to each athlete’s personality and context.
A person-centered approach is crucial for achieving meaningful results.
When is the best time to start?
While any time is a good time to work on our mental toughness, the ideal time to begin a comprehensive mental skills program is in the off-season.

These skills take time to develop, and building them systematically without the immediate pressure of racing is more effective.

What are the limitations of working with you and Tri-CHAMPS
rather than a certified sports psychologist?
This program is designed specifically to enhance sports performance through mental skills training. It cannot diagnose or treat clinical disorders. All subjects covered fall within Dougs’ scope of practice, and if deeper issues arise, he will refer athletes to the appropriate licensed professionals who can support them.
Just as physical training builds strength and endurance,
this program develops mental skills to support athletic performance.
